Staff from Winona area schools convened at Winona Senior High School to participate in a Youth Mental Health First Aid course. This eight-hour certification training educated participants on how to offer help to a young person experiencing a mental health challenge, mental health disorder, or a mental health crisis including suicidal ideation. This evidence based public education and prevention training teaches participants to recognize the symptoms of mental health problems; how to offer and provide initial help; and how to guide the individual to professional help, if appropriate. Each participant received a 212 page guide and will officially be certified as a Youth Mental Health First Aider by the National Council on Behavioral Health. The course was taught by Deb Cavitt from the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health.
